ACRL-Mississippi Chapter Luncheon and Business Meeting at the 2009 MLA Conference
 
The annual luncheon of the Mississippi Chapter of the ACRL will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009 from 12:00 noon - 1:30 pm at the Mississippi Library Association Conference on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. The theme of this year's luncheon will be "Sustainable and Green @ Your Library." At the luncheon, Frederick Stoss, an associate librarian from the University at Buffalo, SUNY will discuss what libraries and librarians can do to help individuals, organizations, communities (including college and university communities), and other stakeholders live sustainably where we live, work, and play - a greenhouse gas-constrained world. Immediately after the luncheon, there will be an ACRL-Mississippi Chapter business meeting.
 
ACRL Announces New Publications
 
The ACRL announced the publication of some new books. The book primarily highlighted is the book titled Working Together: Collaborative Information Practices for Organizational Learning. The author of this book is Mary M. Somerville. "Working Together" presents a framework for comprehensive redesign of library organizations. Other books featured in the announcement included Changing Academic Library: Operations, Cultures, Environments: Publications in Librarianship by John M. Budd and the following two books by Melanie Hawks: Influencing Without Authority and Life-Work Balance. E-Learning Opportunities from ACRL

 

Instructional Design for Online Teaching and Learning (Online Seminar: October 5 - 31, 2009) In this hands-on course the intellectual focus will be on using good instructional design and Web page design principles. Other topics will include Web-based teaching techniques and the Moodle LMS.

 

Copyright and the Library Part 1: The Basics Including the DMCA (Online Seminar: October 5 - 23, 2009) This course will focus on copyright law, creating a "copyright palette" for participants' libaries, and legal risks in regard to copyright law. The Fair Use clause of the copyright law will also be discussed.

 

Next Generation Information Commons: Retooling and Refining the Vision (Live Webcast: October 13, 2009) Throught the use of principles and practical examples, participants will learn about trends in information and learning commons.

 

The Role of the Librarian in Combating Student Plagiarism (Live Webcast: October 20, 2009) This Webcast examines strategies libraries and libarians can implement to reduce plagiarism on campus.

ACRL Immersion '10 Program

 

ACRL is accepting applications for its Immersion '10 Program. Complete program details and application materials are online at http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/issues/infolit/professactivity/iil/immersion/immersion10.cfm. The application deadline is December 11, 2009.

 

The ACRL Immersion '10 Program provides four and a half days on intensive information literacy training and education for academic librarians. Applications are being accepted for Immersion '10 Teacher and Program tracks, to be held at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, July 25-30, 2010. Acceptance to Immersion '10 is competitive to ensure an environment that fosters group interaction and active participation. The application deadline is December 11, 2009, and notifications will be issued in February 2010.

2009 Women's Leadership Institute

 

ACRL is partnering with seven higher education associations to offer the 2009 Women's Leadership Institute, to be held from December 6 - 9, 2009 in Amelia Island, Florida.
